Keep the pressure on! PAA to Senate: No on DeVos

PAA sent the following to every US Senator today:

Please vote “No” on DeVos nomination

We respectfully ask you to vote “no” on the appointment of Betsy DeVos for US Secretary of Education. We communicated our detailed reasons to all Senators by fax last week, and appreciate the fact that so many are considering a “no” vote on this most controversial candidate. Our main concerns are that:

  • Mrs. DeVos’s opposition to charter school accountability calls into serious question her commitment to the responsible stewardship of public education funds.

  • Mrs. DeVos’s relentless promotion of school vouchers and privatization call into serious question her commitment to public education and the critical role it plays in our democracy.

While we treasure our nation’s emphasis on local governance of public schools, parents also look to the federal department of education to support and champion our public schools. We have been frustrated over the past few years by the efforts of a few wealthy ideologues including Mrs. DeVos to privatize public education. We have seen the results: drastic, debilitating budget cuts in public education even as charter and voucher schools show little academic advancement in comparison with traditional schools. This is the wrong direction for our nation and our children.

Please listen to the concerns and wisdom of active public school parents around the nation, who urge you to vote “no” on the Betsy DeVos nomination for U.S. Secretary of Education.
