Join us for PAA Week August 14-17!

Proposed PAA Week schedule August 14-17

PAA is offering a virtual leadership conference during the week of August 14. All are invited to participate on Monday, Tuesday and Wednesday, with Thursday’s session reserved for PAA member leaders only.

Our goals for the week are:

  • to promote a stronger parent voice in education decision making by presenting some of the results of our 2017 parent survey
  • to encourage and support confident parent outreach to state and congressional legislators during PAA Week and beyond
  • to be refreshed and energized with a pep talk from Helen Gym, PAA founding member and current Philly city councilperson,
  • to provide opportunities for PAA leaders and others to share their concerns and successes, and
  • to strategize actions for the coming school year.

Here’s the schedule:

Monday, August 14 via the PAA newsletter and social media

Legislative Outreach Kickoff: We’ll kick off a week of legislative outreach activities.

Congress is home for the next two weeks, so it’s a good time to drop by their local offices. It’s also important to reach out to your state legislators now that ESSA has turned much of the education decision making on federal funds and programs back to the states. During PAA Week we’ll offer a few simple things you can do to be more effective in your advocacy work, and share some of the resources we use when we make Capitol Hill visits.

Tuesday, August 15, 1 pm ETvia public press release and conference call* open to the press and public

Results of PAA’s 2017 parent survey! Between July 1 and August 1, PAA carried out a survey of parents and others called “Real Parent Voices/Choices.” 584 people responded. We will present the results of this survey and discuss some of its implications for our work.

We’ll do the CONTEST DRAWING for survey-taker prizes!

Wednesday, August 16, 1 pm ETvia conference call* open to the public

Helen Gym pep talk! PAA founding member Helen Gym will share her story about becoming a city councilperson in Philadelphia and the many things she has already been able to accomplish in office. We’ll also introduce our two newest PAA Board members, Zerlina Smith from Chicago and Laura Bowman from Virginia. Sheila Warren from the Portland Parents’ Union will share her positive “love them up” message and we’ll have time for other PAA leaders to talk about some of their successes and challenges.
