PAA’s Parent Online Toolkit for the WBD* movie and beyond

Posted on by admin

Parents Across America is a network of active parents doing the hard work of change in our public schools. We know that our schools need help. Knowing what to do is the problem. Knowing what works in improving schools is even more important. We know that most parents don’t want to close their schools or turn them into charters. They want to improve their local neighborhood public schools by stopping budget cuts, reducing class size, de-emphasizing high stakes testing, offering …

What’s happening in Santa Fe schools?

Cate Moses, a Santa Fe parent, just sent in this comment, after reading the influential post by Sue Peters called “How to tell if your district is infected by the Broad virus.”  See also our Parent Guide to the Broad Foundation’s Training Programs.  You can also check out the new memo, recently disclosed, revealing plans by the Broadies to further expand their influence across the country.  Cate alerts us to a similar program, called the Harvard Urban Superintendents Program. Why are tycoons, politicians pushing ‘rigor’ for preschoolers?

By Caroline Grannan, San Francisco Parents Across America founding member An author with whom I collaborate as editor asked me to write her a brief summary explaining who’s behind the current brand of education reform. Her topic – and concern – is the increasing academic “rigor” being imposed on young children.  Here’s the question behind this: Teachers overwhelmingly – and parents generally – know that mandating academic rigor for young children is developmentally inappropriate. So if teachers and parents know …

What’s NOT in the Won’t Back Down Movie

Posted on by admin

Today’s Washington Post Answer Sheet offers this common-sense response to the Won’t Back Down movie written by Rita Solnet, a founding member of Parents Across America. Rita went  to a screening  of the film yesterday and had this reaction to what she didn’t see: I didn’t see parents talking to teachers to help improve the school. No sign or talk of School Advisory Councils, of PTAs, not even parent friends talking to each other over coffee about how they could organize …

Posted on by admin

This is Oregon SOS’s latest blog post about high stakes testing — a response to a newspaper opinion piece by Sue Levin of Oregon Stand for Children” In response to Sue Levin’s commentary in the Oregonian on July 31st regarding high-stakes testing, the real question shouldn’t be how many times does a student test, but rather why have high-stakes testing at all? All of the nation’s best testing experts say that testing should not be used to make high stakes …
